What Makes a Good Logo?

To determine if a logo is good or not, you need to make sure it can perform three key tasks. If it does, you can be certain you have an effective logo that will do its job well and push your brand forward.


1. Your Logo Should Work in Black and White

You have a good logo if it works on a background of any color. If it  consists of too many colors in the design, it will be challenging to use in certain environments. For example, if you need to have the color blue in your logo and you also want to place it on a blue background, it suddenly becomes a hurdle.

Of course, anyone could argue there’s an easy solution for to the problem: simply change the background color. But if you do, you would be limiting your logo. It should work on all backgrounds and environments and be easy to recognize at the same time. If your logo can do this, you’ll have a great advantage.


2. Your Logo Should Work in Any Size

If your logo is scalable, it will perform well. Scalability means people should be able to recognize your logo in any situation, whether it’s on a billboard or on the cap of a bottle.

Scalability is key because it determines how versatile a logo is, so it’s a vital factor to think about. After all, You need to be able to use your logo everywhere.

Society is always changing and with the growth of technology, we’ve moved more from print to digital communication. This transition has forced brands to make their logos simpler so they can work in all these new environments, especially smartphones.

If you don’t have a scalable logo, it will be impossible for your brand to be recognizable on a mobile phone. This will create confusion for the consumer and will affect your business.


3. Your Logo Should Represent Your Brand’s Core Message

Designing a logo that can represent the core message of your brand is challenging. It’s a process to determine a brand’s core message. First, you have to create a
brand strategy and focus on your brand messaging.

Once you’ve found a core message that expresses your values, you have to simplify it, if you want it to be memorable without too much effort from the consumer.

To accomplish that, you not only have to make the message simple, you also have to deliver it in a simple way. Consider all the successful brands on the market, such as
Nike.

Their logo is as recognizable and effective as it gets, but they also have a slogan that
everyone is familiar with. That slogan represents the brand’s vision effortlessly and it’s
extremely easy to remember, making the brand recognizable globally.


So, How Effective Is Your Logo?

As you can see, it’s not too difficult to determine if a logo is good or not. If your logo can perform the three tasks explained above, it’s a good one.

If your logo gets all 3 points, you can be certain it will have an impact. If it only gets 2 of the points, it means you have a solid logo. If your logo only gets 1 point,
you’re still okay, but you’ll likely want to think about improving.
